Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 9/3/2010

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Pakistan's military rises to the fore

The devastating floods in Pakistan will force thousands of refugees to return to Afghanistan, where they will be welcomed with open arms by the Taliban. This is alarming to Washington, as is the strong likelihood that militants will exploit Pakistan's weakness as it slowly recovers from disaster. The only hope lies in Pakistan's military.
