  • Tropical cyclone PENNY continued west over the Coral Sea towards the north-east coast of Queensland with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression). On 8 January at 0.00 UTC its centre was located approximately 400 km east of Townsville and 420 km south-east of Palm Island (Queensland).
  • Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to continue south-west toward the north-east coast of Quennsland. Heavy rainfall and strong winds could affect the areas of the central and east coast, including the Whitsunday Islands.
  • A severe weather warning and flood watch are in effect for coastal regions, specifically for Burdekin, Whitsunday, Mackay and Rockhampton.

  • Tropical cyclone PENNY is continuing west over the Coral Sea towards the north-east coast of Queensland with maximum sustained winds of 74 km/h (tropical storm). On 7 January at 0.00 UTC its centre was approximately 690 km north-east of Townsville and 770 km east of Tully village.
  • It is forecast to continue west and could approach the north-east coast of Queensland on 9 January. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), PENNY could bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to areas of the central and east coast of Queensland, including the Whitsunday Islands.
  • A Severe Weather Warning is in effect for the east Burdekin, Whitsunday and Mackay regions.

  • On 4 January, at 0.00 UTC its centre was approx. 900 km north-east of Whitsunday Coast (Queensland), 530 km south-east of Tagula Island (Papua New Guinea) and 800 km south-west of Guadalcanal Island (Solomon Islands). Over the next 72 hours it is forecast to weaken as it moves towards the Queensland coast.
