  • Damage was sustained to infrastructure in Beira City (Dondo District, Sofala Province) after the passage of tropical cyclone DESMOND in central Mozambique on 21 January,
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are forecast over central Mozambique (Manica, Tete, Zambézia and Sofala Provinces) and over southern Malawi.

  • Tropical cyclone DESMOND continues moving north-west, weakening. It made landfall in the province of Zambézia (Mozambique), near the border with the Sofala province and approx. 130 km south-west of Nicuadala town, as a Tropical Storm with maximum sustained winds up to 65 Km/h.
  • Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to continue moving north towards the Zambézia Province, weakening and dissipating. Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms could still affect many districts of the Sofala Province (Marromeu, Cheringoma, Caia, Muanza, Dondo, Buzi, Nhamatanda, Maringué) and Zambézia Province (Chinde, Mopeia Luabo, Namacurra, Nicoadala, Mocuba, Maganja da costa Morrumbala).
  • As of 22 January at 8:00 UTC, there are no casualties reported.

  • Tropical cyclone DESMOND formed over the southern Mozambique Channel on 20 January before moving north as a tropical storm. On 21 January its centre was approximately 375 km south-east of Quelimane City (Zambezia Province, central Mozambique) with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to continue north-north-west towards Zambezia Province and could approach the coast on the morning of 22 January (UTC) as a tropical storm.
  • Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms could affect Zambezia and Sofala Provinces.
