  • Tropical Cyclone WIPHA (previously named EIGHT) is moving north-west, towards Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan Island (southern China).
  • On 31 July at 0.00 its centre was approximately 240 km south-east of Wenchang City (Hainan Island), with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression).
  • It is forecast to pass north-east of Hainan Island and southern Leizhou Peninsula on the night of 31 July-1 August, with maximum sustained winds of 55-65 km/h before moving into the Gulf of Tonkin, reaching northern Vietnam on 2 August, as a tropical depression.
  • Transport disruptions have been reported between Hainan Island and Continental China.
  • A storm warning has been issued for southern areas of China, while heavy rainfall, strong winds, thunderstorms, and storm surge are forecast over coastal Guangxi Region, south-central Guangdong Province and Hainan Island, and coastal Vietnam between 31 July-3 August.

  • After passing north-east of Hainan Island (China), Tropical Cyclone WIPHA is about to make landfall close to Zhanjiang City (north-eastern Leizhou Peninsula, China) in the morning of 1 August.
  • On 1 August at 0.00, its center was located approximately 73 km south-east of Zhanjiang City, with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression). 
  • Strong winds and heavy rainfall is affecting several coastal areas from Hong Kong to northern Vietnam. In Macau, six people have been injured during the passage of WIPHA, according to media. Tropical cyclone alerts, and heavy rainfall and thunderstorms warnings are in effect for Macau, Hong Kong, Hainan Island, Leizhou Peninsula, and coastal Guangxi Region. Flood warnings have been issued in several provinces of north-eastern Vietnam.
  • Heavy rainfall, with strong winds, and thunderstorms are forecast over north-eastern Vietnam and south-eastern China, including Hainan Island.

  • After passing north of Leizhou Peninsula (China), TC WIPHA is moving in the Gulf of Tonkin, towards the Vietnamese coast. On 2 August at 0.00, its center was located approximately 30 km south of Beihai (Guangxi region, south-eastern China), with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h.
  • In the next 24 hours, it is forecast to strengthen and continue moving south-west in the Gulf of Tonkin, along the coast of Guangxi Region and northern Vietnam. Successively, it is expected to make landfall in coastal Thanh Hóa Province (Vietnam) on the morning of 4 August, with maximum sustained winds up to 56 km/h.
  • Several areas from Hong Kong to eastern Vietnam are experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds. Media report that 28 people were injured during the passage of WIPHA (22 in Hong Kong and 6 in Macau). In Hong Kong, flooding was reported in the towns of Pat Heung and Kam Tin, while 205 people have been displaced in 25 temporary shelters.
  • Warnings for flash flood and landslide have been issued for coastal provinces of north-eastern Vietnam, until 4 August, while heavy rainfall and thunderstorms warnings are in effect for Macau, Hong Kong, Hainan Island, Leizhou Peninsula and coastal Guangxi Region.
  • Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms are forecast over north-eastern Vietnam, south-eastern China, Macau and Hong Kong on 2-4 August.

  • Following Tropical Cyclone WIPHA's passage on 31 July in Vietnam, the national authorities report 12 fatalities and 9 missing following flooding and landslides. The most affected provinces are Soc Trang, Ca Mau and Kien Giang, where at least 6,470 buildings have been damaged. A section of sea dyke on the western coast of Ca Mau was at high risk of breaching due to strong waves.
  • Water levels in the Srepok river are approaching alarming levels, while flash flood and landslide warnings are in effect for low-lying districts in Dak Lak, Lam Dong and Dak Nong provinces.
  • Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and stong winds are forecast across Vietnam from 7-8 August.
