  • Tropical Storm CEMPAKA formed in the South China Sea on 18 July, its centre was located approx 145 km south-east of Yangjiang City (coastal Guangdong Province, south-eastern China) on 19 Kuly at 0.00 UTC, with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h.
  • CEMPAKA is forecast to strengthen as it approaches Guangdong Province and to make landfall near Yangjiang early on 20 July, with winds up to 110 km/h. 
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for coastal areas of central and western Guangdong.

  • Tropical Cyclone CEMPAKA has intensified while moving northwest in the South China Sea. As of 20 July at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 65 km south of Yangjiang City (coastal Guangdong Province, south-eastern China), 150 km south-west of Macao and 210 km south-west of Hong-Kong, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h.
  • CEMPAKA is expected to weaken as it moves northwest. It is forecast to make landfall in the early afternoon of 20 July in an area south-west of Yangjiang City, with maximum sustained winds up to 110 km/h. After that it will move west over south-western Guangdong Province as a tropical depression.
  • The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) issued a typhoon red warning for Yangxi County (west of Yangjiang). On 20-21 July, heavy rainfall, strong winds and high waves are forecast over the central and western coast of Guangdong and the eastern coast of Hainan Island.

  • After making landfall in a coastal area, south of Yangjiang City (southern Guangdong Province, south-eastern China), Tropical Cyclone CEMPAKA is moving westwards over land. On 21 July, at 0.00 UTC its centre was located close to Gaozhou City (south-western Guangdong Province), with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h.
  • After landfall, nearly 5 000 people were evacuated and several flights were cancelled in Yangjiang City, as reported by the Chinese news agency (Xinhua). CEMPAKA is forecast to weaken, as it moves westwards over southern Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces. In the early morning of 23 July, it is expected to turn south and reach the Gulf of Tonkin (north-western part of the South China Sea).
  • According to Xinhua, at least 12 people died, and about 100 000 individuals have been displaced in Zhengzhou City (Henan Province, central-eastern China) during floods caused by heavy rainfall in central-eastern and northern China. In Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, floods affected more than 16 000 people, as two dams collapsed after heavy rainfall, which was the highest since record-keeping began 60 years ago.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over central and northern Henan, the coastal areas of central and western Guangdong, and south-eastern Guangxi Provinces.

  • CEMPAKA is moving over south-eastern China as a tropical depression. On 22 July at 0.00 UTC, its centre was approximately 60 south-east of Nanning City (Guangxi Region), close to the border with Vietnam, with maximum sustained winds of 46 km/h.
  • 105,000 people were evacuated after it made landfall over Guangdong Province, with heavy rainfall affecting the southern and western parts of the province, according to the Chinese news agency (Xinhua).
  • CEMPAKA is forecast to reach the Gulf of Tonkin early on 23 July before making landfall over the central coast of western Hainan Island early on 24 July, with maximum sustained winds up to 65 km/h (tropical storm).
  • On 22-24 July, heavy to very rainfall is forecast over areas of south-western China, including Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan.

  •  On 23 July at 0.00 UTC, Tropical Depression CEMPAKA's centre was located approximately 20 km south of Cam Pha (Quang Ninh Province, north-east Vietnam) and 140 km south-west of Fangchenggang City (Guangxi Region, south-western China), with maximum sustained winds of 46 km/h.
  • Transport disruptions have been reported in southern Guangxi. CEMPAKA is forecast to weaken as it continues south over the Gulf of Tonkin.
  • Warnings for heavy rainfall have been issued for northern and north-eastern areas of Vietnam and heavy rainfall is also forecast for western Henan Island (China).
