India - Tropical Storm FIVE Fri, 03 Dec 2021 00:00

  • The newly formed Tropical Storm FIVE is moving north-westwards over the Bay of Bengal, towards the central coast of eastern India. As of 3 December at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located about 480 km south-east of Visakhapatnam City (northern Andhra Pradesh State), with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h.
  • FIVE is expected to strengthen as it approaches the central coast of eastern India. It is forecast to make landfall in the afternoon of 4 December, in a coastal area between northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha States, with maximum sustained winds up to 95 km/h.
  • National disaster management authorities are implementing preparedness measures, ahead of FIVE. Railway transportation due to severe weather has been cancelled across Odisha coast, as reported by media.
  • On 3-4 December, heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha States.

  • The passage of the tropical storm JAWAD over western Bay of Bengal (near the coastal area of far northern Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and south-western West Bengal) on 4-5 December, caused very heavy rain that has resulted in evacuations and damage.
  • The National Emergency Response Centre (NDMI) reports, as of 5 December, nearly 3,800 evacuated people in 120 relief camps and more than 1,650 affected people across six Districts throughout Andhra Pradesh, the most affected State. In addition, NDMI reports around 400 hospitalised people.
  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 64 teams across the area in order to assist the affected population.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rain is forecast over Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura States (eastern India) as well as over the neighbouring eastern and central Bangladesh.
