  • A new Tropical Storm named ANA formed over the Indian Ocean on 22 January and started moving westward, passing over northern Madagascar.
  • In Madagascar, several heavy rain alerts are in progress after the passage of Tropical Depression N°01 in Northern Madagascar. Provisional assessment of the national disaster management authorities (BNGRC) on 23 January for Grand Tana (the epicenter of the damages) reports 26 people dead; 47,261 victims spread over 20 districts and about 26,730 displaced people have been displaced in Antananarivo Capital City.
  • Under UN OCHA coordination lead, international actors have been mobilised to support the national response across key sectors (shelter, WASH, Health, food security and protection).
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecasted over central-northern Madagascar and over coastal Provinces of Mozambique. Red alerts for tropical depression are in force over coastal Provinces of Mozambique.

  • Tropical storm ANA made landfall in the area of Angoche District (southern Nampula Province, bordering with eastern Zambezia Province, northern Mozambique) on late morning (UTC) of 24 January, with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h. On the afternoon of 24 January and on the early morning of 25 January, it continued moving westward across Zambezia and southern Malawi, further weakening and dissipating.
  • In Mozambique, INGD reports, as of 25 January, two fatalities and 49 injured people across Zambezia, due to the passage of ANA.
  • In Madagascar, the number of fatalities due to heavy rainfall since 17 January (caused by the passage of an intertropical convergence zone and the moderate tropical depression ANA) has increased to 34, according to BNGRC and UN OCHA. Same sources also reports nearly 39,000 evacuated people in 63 emergency shelters and a total of over 64,300 affected people.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over most of Madagascar, the whole Mozambique and most of Malawi. Locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over northern Madagascar and central Mozambique.

  • The passage of ANA on 22-25 January over central-northern Madagascar, northern Mozambique and southern Malawi with heavy rainfall caused rivers overflow, floods and landslides resulting in casualties and widespread damage. 
  • In Madagascar, as of 25 January, 34 fatalities, 35,260 evacuated people in 62 displacement sites, over 6,800 damaged houses and more than 62,000 affected people had been reported.
  • In Mozambique, five fatalities, 66 injured people, 660 damaged houses and 4,000 affected people across Nampula, Zambezia, Tete and Cabo Delgado Provinces are reported.
  • In Malawi, in Nsanje district some 45,000 people are affected, houses collapsed, leaving displaced people in the Southern Region, in particular, the Mulanje City area.
  • In Zimbabwe, heavy rains are reported (above 200 mm) in North and north east of the country. The depression will progress towards Kariba (Gorge of the Zambezi river basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe) and expected to subside by mid-day of 26 January. Coordination meetings have been held at national and provincial level with the Civil Protection department and humanitarian partners. The Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service (EMS) was activated in rapid mapping mode on 25 January.

  • Following the passage of the tropical storm ANA, the number of fatalities, nearly 90 people, in northern and central Madagascar, northern Mozambique and southern Malawi continues to increase.
  • In Madagascar, the number of people impacted by heavy rains and flooding is now 129,720 people, including 55,362 people currently displaced in 98 sites according to the Office of Risks and Disasters (BNGRC). Out of the 72 000 displaced people reported yesterday, about 20 000 people have begun to return home as water is receding.
  • In Mozambique, Search and rescue operations are ongoing. According to UNICEF, some 45,000 people are likely to need humanitarian assistance in Nampula, Zambezia, Tete, Niassa, Sofala and Manica provinces.
  • In Malawi; 91,742 households have been affected and over 50,000 people (17,447 households) have been displaced.
  • The Copernicus satellite rapid mapping was activated on 25 January for Madagascar (), and on 27 January for Malawi (), to support the damage assessment. A new tropical depression is developing in the Indian Ocean (Batsirai) expected to hit Mauritius (Rodrigues island) this Sunday.
