Southern Brazil, June to July 2020A cyclone swept through parts of southern Brazil on 30 June. Winds of over 120 km/h were reported in the state of Santa Catarina. The states of Rio Grande do Sul and Parana were also badly affected by strong winds. At least 9 fatalities were reported as a result of wind damage. Some heavy rain was also reported, in particular in parts of Rio Grande do Sul, where a landslide caused 1 fatality in Nova Prata. Storm surge prompted warnings for coastal flooding in Santa Catarina. In Rio Grande do Sul, river levels are above flood stage in some areas of after the storm brought rain of over 140mm in 24 hours. Note: Civil Defence reports made no distinction between flood or wind damage. On the whole the worst of the damage appears to be a result of strong winds, as of 02 July.
