A massive earthquake in Papua New Guinea with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale has struck the the island of Bougainville early on Tuesday. The earthquake, at 2.19 a.m, was centred about 94 km southwest of the town of Panguna on Bougainville Island, which sits to the northwest of the Solomon Islands.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea’s Bougainville Island early today, US seismologists said, with no immediate tsunami warning issued. The quake hit some 96 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of Panguna at 2:19 am (1local time yesterday), according to the US Geological Survey.
