  • An earthquake of 5.8 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in south-eastern Sichuan Province (south-eastern China) on 17 June at 14.55 UTC. The epicentre was approximately 40 km south-east of Yibin City  and 50 km south-west of Luzhou City. Up to 52,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and up to 362,000 people to strong shaking.
  • As of 18 June at 0.30 UTC, a total of 17 aftershocks of at least 3.0 M were recorded in the same area.
  • Initial reports are that 12 people have died (nine in Changning County and three in Qixian County) and 134 have been injured. At least 10,000 buildings have been damaged and several major roads have been blocked by landslides. More than 100,000 people across Changning county (mainly in Yibin City) have been affected by the event.
  • Search and rescue operations are ongoing and the Ministry of Emergency Management has activated its emergency response for the affected area.
  • Light to moderate rainfall is forecast over Sichuan Province on 18-19 June.

  • The death toll following the earthquake in south-east Sichuan Porvince on 17 April has now reached 13. An additional 220 people have sustained injuries and approximately 244,000 people have been affected. 20,000 houses have reportedly collapsed.
