  • Tropical Cyclone FANI is moving north-west over the southern Bay of Bengal. On 29 April its centre was located approximately 610 km east of Trincomalee City (Sri Lanka) and 930 km north-east of Chennai City (Tamil Nadu, India) with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Over the next 24 hours, it will strengthen to a  severe cyclonic storm, with maximum sustained winds up to 120 km/h.
  • A warning for very strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea has been issued for coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, India.
  • Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected over northern and southern provinces of Sri Lanka, and south-eastern India.

  • Tropical Cyclone FANI is moving over the Bay of Bengal, toward the eastern coast of India. On 30 April at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 650 km south-east of Chennai City (Tamil Nadu, India) and 700 km north-east of Point Pedro town (Northern Province, Sri Lanka), with maximum sustained winds of 157 km/h.
  • In the next 24 hours, it is forecast to move further north-west, intensifying with maximum sustained winds up to 204 km/h.
  • Locally moderate rainfall and strong winds are forecast for north coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Prandesh (India) and the Northern Province (Sri Lanka) until 1 May. Heavy to locally very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge is expected for coastal Odisha and north coastal Andhra Prandesh (India) from 3 May.
  • The National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Coast Guard are on high alert and fishing has been restricted. Indian Navy aircraft are on standby in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to manage the immediate response, if needed.

  • Tropical Cyclone FANI, continues moving north-northeast over the western Bay of Bengal, towards the north-eastern coast of India and western Bangladesh. On 2 May at 0.00 UTC, its center was located approximately 230 km south-east of Visakhapatnam City (Andhra Pradesh, India) with maximum sustained winds of 204 km/h.
  • Tropical Cyclone FANI is forecast to move further north over the Bay of Bengal, approaching the coast of Odisha State and possibly making landfall near Puri City (Odisha) on the morning (UTC) of 3 May, with maximum sustained winds up to 185 km/h. Afterwards, it is likely to continue move northeast over West Bengal (India) and western Bangladesh on 4-5 May.
  • According to National Government, FANI is likely to impact the coastal districs of Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Balasore (Odisha). Around 900 cyclone shelters have been made ready to house the evacuees in Odisha. A suspension of train services in Odisha and Andhra Prandesh has been announced due to the arrival of Tropical Cyclone FANI.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy to locally very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south coastal Odisha, while storm surge from is expected over northern coastal Odesha and coastal West Bengal (India), and coastal divisions of Bangladesh. A Red Warning (Take Action) has been enforced for the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

  • Tropical Cyclone FANI made landfall between Brahmagiri village and Puri City (Odisha State, India) on the morning of 3 May, with maximum sustained winds up to 240 km/h (Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale).
  • After landfall, it will weaken as it moves towards West Bengal, reaching western Bangladesh on morning of 4 May, with maximum sustained winds of 90-110 km/h.
  • Over 1 million people have been evacuated from coastal communities in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and 4 852 shelters have been set up. Rail, road and air traffic have been suspended.
  • In Bangladesh, national authorities have ordered the evacuation of 19 coastal districts and 3 868 evacuation shelters have been opened.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall, strong wind and storm surge are forecast over coastal and adjoining districts of Odisha and West Bengal and eastern Bangladesh. Storm surge up to 2.5 metres is expected in Gangra (West Bengal) on evening of 3 May. 
  • FANI is the most intense tropical cyclone to make landfall in India in the last 20 years.

  • As of 6 May at 8.00 UTC, at least 33 people have been reported dead in India and another 17 in Bangladesh following the passage of Tropical Cyclone FANI. Odisha State has been the most heavily affected, with electricity and infrastructure damaged. According to the authorities, all families in Puri and Khurda districts have been "extremely severely affected" and the response is underway across 10,000 villages and 52 urban areas in north-eastern India.
  • 13,000 houses have been damaged in Bangladesh according to preliminary estimates and national humanitarian assistance has been provided to affected families.
  • The early evacuation of one million people in India and 1.6 million in Bangladesh prevented a higher number of fatalities, considering the cylone's severity.
  • Tropical Cyclone FANI has now dissipated. Locally moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast over north-eastern coastal India and south-western coastal Bangladesh over the next 24 hours.

  • The death toll from Tropical Cyclone FANI has increased to 42 in India, while 17 fatalities have been confirmed in Bangladesh by UN OCHA. Approximately 10 million people from coastal areas in the north-eastern States of India have been affected by the tropical cyclone. 
  • Thunderstorms and strong winds could affect northern West Bengal over the next 24 hours. 
  • The European Commission’s Copernicus emergency satellite mapping service was activated on 2 May, since then have been produced of the affected areas in India.

  • As of 13 May at 8.00 UTC, 64 people have been confirmed dead by the Indian authorities following Tropical Cyclone FANI's passage, 39 in Puri District (Odisha State). Relief and recovery oeprations are ongoing in Odisha State and the water supply has been restored in all urban areas.
  • Locally moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast over Odisha for the next 24 hours.
