  • A new Tropical Cyclone named NISARGA formed over the Arabian Sea on 2 June and started moving north-east toward western coastal area of India. On 3 June its centre was located offshore approximately 210 km south-west of Mumbai City (Maharashtra State), with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h (tropical storm).
  • NISARGA will continue moving northeastward and to make landfall over western coast of Maharashtra (approximately 80 km south of Mumbai) on 3 June morning, with maximum sustained winds up to 80 km/h.
  • According to media, at least 100,000 people, including coronavirus patients, have been preventively evacuated across Maharashtra and Gujarat.
  • On 3-4 June, heavy rain and strong wind are forecast over Maharashtra, Goa and south Gujarat, and light to moderate rain is expected across west Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. 
  • Storm surge warnings are in effect over the coastal districts of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, and wind warnings have been issued across the western coastal States of India, particularly from south Gujarat to Goa. In Mumbai, movement of people near coastline is banned until 4 June noon. The Indian Navy and teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on standby to conduct rescue and relief operations.

  • Tropical Cyclone NISARGA made landfall over Raigad District (Maharashtra State) very close to Shrivardhan City on 3 June with maximum sustained winds up to 120 km/h.
  • The remnant of NISARGA will move to inland east, north-east, weakening into a well low-pressure area over the next 12h.
  • According to media reports, at least 4 people have died and 10 have been injured. Approximately 140 houses have been damaged and power outages have been reported, particularly in the Districts of Pune and Raigad.
  • Emergency teams were deployed by the local authorities to rescue people in the most affected areas.
  • On 4-5 June, moderate to heavy rain is expected across east Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, and strong winds are forecast over the western District of Vidarbha Region.
