Phillippines, Taiwan, Japan, Guam - Tropical Cyclone MAWAR, update (ECHO 01 Jun 2023)

  • Tropical cyclone MAWAR (named "Betty" in the Phillippines) turned northeastward over the north-western Philippine Sea and crossed the Miyako Islands (Japan). On 1 June at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea, approximately 70 km east of Miyako-Jima Island and 200 km south-west of Okinawa Island in southern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 108 km/h (tropical storm).
  • After the influence of MAWAR over eastern and north-eastern Philippines, one person has been injured, almost 6,000 people have been evacuated and more than 30,500 others affected across Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Western Visayas, CAR  and MIMAROPA.
  • MAWAR is forecast to continue northeastward, it could cross Okinawa Island on 1-2 June and it will move over the northern Philippine Sea weakening.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over most of the Ryukyu Islands where red warnings for storm surges are in effect. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are also expected for southern Kyushu and southern Honshu.
