DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 100 PM ChST...0300 UTC...the center of Typhoon Lan was located near latitude 19.2 degrees North and longitude 130.0 degrees East. Lan is moving north at 9 mph. A slow turn to the northeast is expected the next few days, taking Lan east of Okinawa Saturday night, and near the main islands of Japan Sunday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 100 mph. Intensification is expected through Saturday, followed by a weakening trend on Sunday. Typhoon Lan has a very large wind field, with typhoon force winds extending outward up to 140 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds extend up to 405 miles east and south of the center, and up to 265 miles northwest of the center.
