Two earthquakes of 5.4 M and 5.9 M, occurred in Macerata province on 26 October. The epicentre of the first which occurred at 17.10 (UTC), was located 11 km south-west of Castel Sant'Angelo sul Nera, while the epicentre of the second which occurred at 19.18 (UTC) was located approx. 2.5 km north-west of Visso . USGS PAGER estimated a shaking up to "Severe" for 21 000 people. Several strong aftershocks have occurred in the area.
As of 27 October morning, the Italian Civil Protection confirmed that four people have been injured, many buildings have been damaged and traffic and transport have been locally interrupted in Macerata province.
Both earthquakes occurred near the location of the 6.1 M earthquake of 24 August (approx. 15 and 28 km north-west) which caused the death of 297 people and injured at least 365.
Over the next 24 h, heavy rain and strong winds may affect the areas affected by the earthquakes.
The Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated for satellite mapping over the affected area.
