Heavy rain has been affecting the central and southern regions of the country since the beginning of April.
According to United Nations reports, as of 16 May, 718 000 people have resulted directly affected and 220 000 people have been displaced because of the floods. So far, the worst affected regions are Hiraan, Gedo and Lower Juba in which more than 204 000 people have been displaced. They also reported, as of the same date, that the floods have also impacted crops, shelters, and critical infrastructure, including water, health, nutrition and education facilities. The WASH Cluster reports that 550 000 people are in critical need of emergency WASH support.
A low pressure area formed over the southwest Arabian Sea on 14 May. In the next 48 hours, it is forecast to move west-northwestwards towards the Gulf of Aden, strengthening. Heavy rain and strong winds may affect several areas of the coast of Yemen, northern Somalia, and southeastern Ethiopia over 16-21 May.
