The flood situation in Sri Lanka continues to deteriorate. As reported by the National Disaster Relief Centre (NDRSC) on 28 May, the death toll has reached 24 people and 13 more injured. They also mentioned, as of the same date, that over 174 000 people were affected, mostly in the northern, the central and the western areas of the country. In addition, more than 17 900 were evacuated into 265 welfare centres and 5 326 houses were damaged due to floods and landslides in 12 districts.
As per the immediate rapid impact analysis estimates, 45 680 families are in need of emergency flood relief and early recovery assistance. The immediate needs of the affected people are being addressed with local resources: 854 military and police officials have been deployed in the worst affected districts of Kaluthura, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle, Matara, Gampaha, Putalam, Kurunakale and Colombo.
According to the national meteorological service, over the next 24 hours moderate to localised heavy rain with strong winds may continue to affect the already affected areas of the country, especially the western part of Sri Lanka.
The Government of Sri Lanka has not requested any international assistance so far.
