Germany - Floods update

The number of casualties due to extensive and damaging flooding in western Germany has increased. According to the initial impact overview from German Joint Information and Situation Centre (GMLZ) and media, at least 81 people died across Districts of Rhineland-Palatinate, and the North Rhine-Westphalia States. Up to 1,300 individuals remain unreachable, as the cellular network is damaged in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler District (Rhineland-Palatinate).

About 51 individuals have been injured in North Rhine-Westphalia, and a number of houses have collapsed due to flood water. The overflow of Steinbach and Rur dams has been reported, and according to GMLZ, a dike breach is no longer ruled out.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, firefighters were able to rescue more than 300 people, but several individuals remain stranded. The supply of drinking water and electricity has been disrupted for several areas of the Trier-Saarburg District.

The European Commission's Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated (EMSR517), and 19 satellite maps have been provided to support the analysis of the affected areas.

Over the next 24 hours, heavy rain is forecast over southern, south-western and northeastern Germany.
