India - Tropical Cyclone HUDHUD UPDATE

HUDHUD made landfall in the area of Visakhapatnam, north Andhra Pradesh in the morning (UTC) of 12 October, having maximum sustained wind speed of approximately 200km/h. It subsequently moved inland, weakening into a Tropical Depression.
HUDHUD affected north Coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Odisha and Chhattisgarh with strong winds and heavy rainfall, as well as storm surge along the coast. In Visakhapatnam, 145mm of rain were measured in 24h over 11-12 October, while JRC calculations indicated storm surge of up to 1.3m.
As of 13 October, local media report six people dead, three of which in Andhra Pradesh and three in Odisha. In Visakhapatnam, the area worst hit, the water, electricity and communication networks were damaged and so were streets, the naval base and the international airport of the city.
ECHO Partners have commenced assessments. ECHO is monitoring the situation; a team will be in Odisha as from tomorrow and will be ready to assess needs caused by the winds and floods, if a severe impact is confirmed.

On 10 October, 0.00 UTC, HUDHUD had intensified (maximum sustained wind speed 121km/h) and was centred over central Bay of Bengal, approximately 585km south-east of Visakhapatnam in northern coastal Andhra Pradesh. Over the next 48h, it is forecast to move north-west and approach northern Andhra Pradesh on 12 October, while it continues intensifying.
As of 10 October, the IMD has a Cyclone Alert in effect for north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha. HUDHUD is expected to affect these areas with strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge. JRC calculations indicate possible storm surge of approx. 1.4m near Visakhapatnam on 12 October early morning (UTC).

Tropical Cyclone HUDHUD is moving over the Bay of Bengal, strengthening. On 9 October at 00.00 UTC it had max. sustained winds of 100 km/h and its center was located over water, approx. 800 km south-east of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh, India).
In the next 48 h it is forecast to continue moving north-west over water, towards India, strengthening. According to the data of 9 October, HUDHUD is expected to reach the coast of north-eastern Andhra Pradesh early on 12 October.
Heavy rains, strong winds and storm surge may affect parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on 11-13 October. As of 9 October morning, a Cyclone Alert is in effect for north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts.
