Cabo Verde, West Africa - Tropical Cyclone FRED

FRED formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Guinea-Bissau and southern Senegal, on 30 August. On 31 August, at 3.00 UTC, it was a Tropical Storm, with maximum sustained wind speed of 111km/h. Its centre was located 76km east of Maio island in Cabo Verde.

FRED is forecast to move north-west, passing near or over the northern (Barlavento) Islands of Cabo Verde on 31 August. Its intensity will increase and it will probably become a Hurricane on the same day.

Heavy rainfall (up to 200mm at places), strong winds and storm surge may affect Cabo Verde within the day and a Hurricane Warning is in effect for all the islands of the archipelago.

Heavy rainfall has been affecting West Africa over the past few weeks and may have been further influenced by the formation of Tropical Cyclone FRED over the past couple of days. Approximately 176mm were observed in the city of Banjul, Gambia, and 71mm in Cap Skirring, Senegal, both on the Atlantic side of the countries, over 29-30 August.
