China, Taiwan - Tropical Cyclone MARIA-18

Tropical Cyclone MARIA-18 continued moving northwest and made landfall over Miyako island on 10 July in the afternoon (UTC) as intense Typhoon. It then passed the northern coast of Taiwan heading toward Fujian (China) and it made a second landfall close to Ningde city (Huangqi Peninsula, Fujian province) on 11 July early morning (UTC) with maximum sustained winds of 154-177 km/h (Typhoon) and continued moving north-west over land crossing Fujian and weakening.
Over the next 24 hours, it is expected to keep moving northwest passing over Jiangxi province. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and storm surge may affect several areas of northern Taiwan island, central-northern Fujian, southern Zhejiang and central-southern Jiangxi over 11-12 July.
The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan, as of 11 July, has issued a heavy rain and strong wind advisory for northern and eastern Taiwan island and a sea and land Typhoon warning for Lienchiang island (Taiwan).

Tropical Cyclone MARIA continued moving northwest over the Philippine Sea, strengthening. On 6 July at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located 1 500 km southeast of Okinawa group of islands (Japan) and had maximum sustained winds of 259 km/h (very intense typhoon).
Over the next 48 hours, it is expected to keep heading northwest toward Okinawa as a very intense typhoon (equivalent to category 4-5 on the Saffir Simpson Scale). Heavy rain may continue to affect several areas of the Marianas and excessive rainfall and flash flooding remain possible, especially across Guam and Rota.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for heavy rain in Mijyako Chiho island, Amami group of island, the whole Kyushu island and southwestern Honshu island.
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is following the event through the information automatically collected and analysed in the Global Disasters Alerts and Coordination System (GDACS). The typhoon was categorized as a red alert in GDACS on 5 July morning UTC, but was later downgraded to an orange alert due to the large lead time and low vulnerability of the affected country.
