Tropical Cyclone BARRY formed over the Gulf of Mexico on 10 July and started moving west-north-west towards the southern Louisiana coast. On 12 July at 3:00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 260 km south-east of Morgan City and approximately 355 km south-east of Lafayette, with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h.
According to media, as of 12 July, roads were closed, traffic was severely disrupted and some flights from Louis Armstrong International Airport were delayed across the New Orleans area due to the flooding. In addition, a mandatory evacuation order for around 10,000 people is in effect for Plaquemines Parish (eastern coast of Louisiana).
On the forecast track, BARRY is expected to make landfall on 13 July around 12:00 UTC over the central Louisiana coastal area, approximately 30 km south-west of Morgan City, with maximum sustained winds up to 110 km/h.
Heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges could affect the Gulf Coast from central Louisiana to the Mississippi/Alabama border as well as parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley over the next 24 hours. Tornadoes are possible across south-eastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and along the Alabama coast over the same period.
Several warnings are in effect for the area: a Hurricane Warning and a Storm Surge Warning over the central-eastern coastal area of Louisiana; a Tropical Storm Warning over the whole coast of Louisiana as well as the New Orleans metropolitan area.
