SOULIK is approaching northern Taiwan as a Typhoon. At 00:00 UTC on 12 July its centre was located ca. 460 km east of the coasts of Taiwan, it had a max. sust. wind speed of 175 km/h (equivalent to a Hurricane Category 2) and was heading WNW. The centre of SOULIK is expected to approach the coasts of northern Taiwan and probably make landfall in the evening of 12 July (UTC), slightly strengthened, affecting the area with very strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge. Ishigaki island of Japan, lying ca. 100km north of the forecast track of SOULIK should also be affected by similar phenomena. The Tropical Cyclone is then expected to traverse Taiwan and head towards mainland China on 13 July, slightly weakened. Taiwan Meteo has issued a “Land Typhoon Warning“ for strong winds and torrential rainfall (more than 200mm in 24h expected), for most northern counties. AFP reports around 2,000 tourists evacuated from Green Island, off the eastern coast. Warnings for Storm, high waves and storm surge are also in effect for Ishigaki by the Japanese Meteorological Agency. Chinese Meteorological Agency has issued an Orange Typhoon Warning for heavy rainfall in SE Zhejiang and NE Fujian provinces of mainland China. JRC calculations based on 12 July 00:00 UTC indicate a possible storm surge of the order of 2m in a number of places in mainland China, Fujian province, early on 13 July.
