Europe Media Monitor (EMM) reads and analyses around 40.000 new news items per day from around 1000 sites worldwide. The text of the items, extracted using EMM's own text extraction algorithm, is indexed using Lucene (see http://lucene.apache.org). Please make sure your area of interest is not already covered by one of the pre-defined categories (alerts). If it is, we kindly ask you to use the feed from that category as this significantly reduces the load on our system. This site is a joint project of DG-JRC and DG-COMM.
Summary

On 11/17/2005 10:06:11 PM UTC an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 has struck the unpopulated region of Southeast Of Honshu, Japan in Japan.

Whether international humanitarian aid is needed must be decided by an
expert. However, the following automatically calculated elements can help.
This earthquake has potentially a low humanitarian impact
and the affected region has low vulnerability to natural disasters.

0

The population in the area of
this earthquake if 0 people/km².

The earthquake occurred at 7h local time.
At this time a day, more people are at work and therefore more
vulnerable to collapsing office buildings.

During traffic hours, people can be affected by collapsing bridges and other road infrastructure.

Resilience and Vulnerability

Resilience is the capacity of the population to cope with a hazard. Since
much of investments in earthquake preparedness and available funds for quick
response is related to household income, the GDP per capita can be used as a
rough indicator of resilience.

Japan has a GDP per capita of 42317 PPP$ (Parity Purchasing Power Dollar, about 1 Euro)
and is therefore part of the high level income countries. Therefore, the earthquake happened
in an area of high resilience.

Based on the combination of 9 indicators, ECHO attributes Japan a low vulnerability.

Secondary
effects

Probability of secondary effects:

Landslides: The maximum slope in the area of the earthquake is 0%
and the maximum altitude is 0 m. Since this is a low slope, the risk of earthquake
induced landslides is low. Note, however, that the
slope data is not reliable on a local scale, while landslides depend very much
on local topography, soil and meteorological conditions.

Nuclear
  power plants:

The following nuclear installations are near the epicenter: FUKUSHIMA-DAIICHI (471km), FUKUSHIMA-DAINI (460km), HAMAOKA (298km), KASHIWAZAKI KARIWA (515km), TOKAI (366km)

Tsunami: JRC is currently not modelling probability of tsunami generation. Please refer to NOAA's
tsunami alert system for information on tsunamis in the Pacific Ocean:
  http://tsunami.gov/. However, for
earthquakes in the ocean and with magnitude larger than 6.5, the propagation of
a potential tsunami is modelled below.

The magnitude is too low for tsunami generation.

Summary

On 11/17/2005 12:38:04 PM UTC an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 has struck the unpopulated region of Off East Coast Of Honshu, Japan in Japan.

The earthquake occurred at 22h local time.
At this time a day,
more people are at home and therefore more vulnerable to collapsing residential buildings.

The following nuclear installations are near the epicenter: FUKUSHIMA-DAIICHI (353km), FUKUSHIMA-DAINI (356km), HIGASHI DORI (489km), ONAGAWA (311km), TOKAI (421km)
