JAMES Cook University researcher Hannah Hilbert-Wolf and supervisor Dr Eric Roberts examined the ground around Mbeya, Tanzania, where a large earthquake occurred some 25,000 years ago. They found evidence of fluidisation, where soil behaves like quicksand, which in turn pushed a bus-sized block of sandstone 15 metres towards the surface.
