However...residents of Yap and Ulithi should closely monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Man-yi through at least tonight as it passes to the north. SUMMARY OF 700 AM CHST...2100 UTC...INFORMATION ----------------------------------------------- Location...11.4N 138.7E About 120 miles northwest of Ulithi About 140 miles north-northeast of Yap About 165 miles northwest of Fais About 435 miles west-southwest of Guam About 535 miles west-southwest of Saipan Maximum sustained winds...45 mph Present movement...west...260 degrees at 20 mph DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 700 AM CHST...2100 UTC...the center of Tropical Storm Man-yi was located near Latitude 11.4 degrees North and Longitude 138.7 degrees East. Man-yi is moving west at 20 mph. It is expected to maintain this general course today before turning west overnight and Friday with a slight decrease in forward speed. This current track has not dropped any further south than the prior forecast track and maintains a close-by approach of Man-yi just to the north of Yap Island around midday today. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 45 mph. Man-yi is forecast to intensify through Friday, possibly beginning a phase of rapid intensification later today. Man-yi could become a typhoon by this evening. Tropical storm force winds extend outward from the center up to 145 miles to the north with no damaging winds to the south.
