As of 700 AM ChST, the center of Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) was located near latitude 9.5N and longitude 151.3E. This was about 520 miles east-southeast of Guam. Storm motion was north-northeast, 15 degrees, at 5 mph. Storm intensity was 110 mph. .SITUATION OVERVIEW... Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) is slowly moving away from Chuuk State, with an expected pivot to the north and then northwest as it heads toward the Marianas. In the meantime, Sinlaku continues to bring periods of intense showers, thunderstorms, and winds to a large portion of Chuuk State, primarily to Ulul, Fananu, and Weno, Chuuk. The most recent storm track produced by JTWC indicates a slight northward shift in the storm path during its passage toward the Marianas, now more likely to cross over Rota. Even so, it is still too early to provide exact wind and surge forcast values for any specific island in the Marianas. .PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... As Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) moves closer, the threat for sustained high winds will continue to increase. The latest forecast is for Tropical storm force winds to begin affecting the Marianas Monday afternoon and evening. Typhoon Sinlaku could potentially cross the Marianas as a category 3 or 4 Typhoon. A general concern should be for the possibility of at least extensive damage somewhere within the Marianas under the Typhoon Watch. ...COASTAL INUNDATION AND SURF INFORMATION... Due to higher astronomical tides next week and pre-existing elevated seas due to non-TC features in the area, hazardous surf is likely to become dangerous across north, east and south reefs in the Marianas as surf builds to 15 feet, and potentially spreading to west facing reefs once TY Sinlaku moves west of the islands. Coastal inundation is becoming more likely, now possible as early as Monday morning; as such, a Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect beginning Monday morning for significant coastal inundation of 2 feet or more possible. Inland flooding made worse by developing rain bands during storm passage will significantly increase coastal inundation as rain run-off and storm surge interact. Surf will be slow to decrease after Sinlaku's exit to the northwest in the second half of the week, as swells will continue to pummel western Marianas shores. ...OTHER STORM EFFECTS... Heavy, intense rainfall with TY Sinlaku is likely for much of the week, with rainfall amounts upwards of 15 to 20 inches near the center, as the system crosses the Marianas. The exact track of Sinlaku will determine where the heaviest rainfall will set up across the Islands. As such, a Flood Watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. See latest forecast for latest information. Listen for possible flash flood warnings for your location, and be ready to act if flash flooding develops. $$ ...CHUUK... ...TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR CHUUK... .PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Remain in a sturdy shelter until the all clear is given. ...WIND INFORMATION... Winds will be south at 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph at Weno, Chuuk today, as Sinlaku slowly moves away to the northwest. As Sinlaku continues to move slowly through the region and towards the Marianas, tropical storm force winds should begin subsiding this afternoon. ...COASTAL INUNDATION AND SURF INFORMATION... Seas of 12 to 14 feet are occurring. This will result in dangerous surf of 13 to 16 feet along south and west-facing reefs, with up to 2 feet of inundation likely. Elsewhere, hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet are expected. ...OTHER STORM EFFECTS... Satellite microwave estimates and model guidance continue to suggest the potential for heavy rain to decrease through this afternoon. Additional rainfall of 3 to 5 inches is possible through late this afternoon; the already saturated soils will still pose the risk for any additional rainfall to become runoff, increasing likelihood for sudden flash floods and maintaining a high risk for mudslides. && ...FANANU... ....TYPHOON WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FANANU... .PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
