The highest number of deaths has been recorded in the district of Sindhupalchowk (2 991). A further increase of these figures is still expected as access to remote areas is improving. </li> <li>Almost 300 000 houses have reportedly been destroyed, with 270 000 damaged and in need of repair. In Sindhupalchowk, up to 96% of houses are reported destroyed in many villages. This level of damage has been confirmed by ECHO experts on the ground. </li> <li>There are major challenges in optimising the use of foreign military assets, particularly airlift, which seem to remain under-utilised. This is affecting the transport of relief items and aid workers to remote communities which cannot be reached by road or path. Efforts are needed to gain clearance for maximising flying times to priority areas. </li> <li>Immediate priority needs remain emergency shelter, emergency health care, and logistics. The highest number of deaths has been recorded in the district of Sindhupalchowk (2 829), while most damage is reported so far in the district of the capital, Kathmandu, where more than 37 500 buildings have been completely destroyed.</li> <li>International humanitarian assistance continues with efforts targeting also remote villages, which are only accessible by aerial means and may not have been reached yet. Two UNDAC/EU Civil protection teams are operational in the humanitarian hubs established in Sindulpalchowk and Gorkha districts. Several Advanced Medical Posts (AMP) are providing services to the affected population.</li> <li>During his visit to Nepal together with UN Emergency Relief Coordinator V. Amos last week, Commissioner C. Stylianides advocated for upholding the humanitarian principles and ensuring the utmost operational space for humanitarian actors responding to the needs of those affected by the earthquake. Official source quoted in the media (as of early 30 April) reported 5 500 dead across the country, with 1 587 dead in Sindhupalchowk and 1 039 in Kathmandu, and 11 000 people injured. It is estimated that 2.8 million people are displaced and more than 3.5 million people are in need of food assistance. In total more than 3 600 houses were reported destroyed and another 7 700 partially damaged. These figures are expected to increase. </li> <li>The main priority needs are shelter, water and sanitation, logistics, health and food. On 29 April, The UN launched a three-month duration consolidated Flash Appeal for USD 415 million (EUR 369.2 million).</li> <li>Commissioner Stylianides and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos are starting a joint mission today.</li> <li>In China, the death toll is still 25, with four people missing and 797 injured, while about 25 800 houses were damaged. Media reported that the evacuation of nearly 6 000 people has started in Zham on 29 April, due to the risk of more landslides.</li> <li>Over the next 24 h, the weather will be cloudy with possible rain and local thunderstorms in some areas of eastern and central regions of Nepal during the afternoon and evening. According to the latest figures (as of 28 April evening), at least 5 057 people were killed and more than 8 317 injured. Most of the deaths occurred in the district of Sindhupalchuk (1 250 dead) and in Kathmandu (1 093 dead). These figures will increase, especially once communications are restored and government officials and aid workers are able to access the outlying affected areas. Several remote areas are still cut off or it is difficult to have access. In the last 24 h, rainfall affected the areas of Kathmandu Valley on 28 April, hampering relief efforts. As of 28 April, 39 districts (out of 75) were reported affected in the Western and Central Regions of Nepal, 11 of which reported as severely affected. Moreover up to 90% health facilities in the districts of Gorkha, Sindhupalchok, Ramechapp and Nuwakot were severely damaged (as of 28 April, UN).</li> <li>One Commission's humanitarian expert has started today a field mission to Lamjung district, adjacent to Gorkha district, another one is planned to reach Gorkha district on 30 April. </li> <li>In India, over 70 people were killed, with 56 deaths in the State of Bihar, 12 in Uttar Pradesh, two in West Bengal and one in Rajasthan. Local media reported also nearly 290 people injured in these states. </li> <li>Over the next 24 h, locally thunderstorms are forecast for some areas of the eastern and central regions, as well light to moderate snowfall in the eastern high mountainous regions of Nepal. Numbers are expected to continue to rise significantly. The district of Sindhupalchuk alone has recorded 1 176 deaths and another 1 039 have been reported in Kathmandu. According to the UN, an estimated 8 million people have been affected throughout Nepal. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated by DG ECHO on 25 April to map a number of damaged areas in the country, including the capital city, Kathmandu. </li> <li>In India, 72 deaths have been reported as of 28 April, 56 of which in the worst affected State of Bihar. Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan have also reported fatalities.</li> <li>The death toll continues increasing also in the Tibet Autonomous Region in south-west China, with 25 fatalities and 117 injured as of 28 April. </li> <li>Worst affected is the Prefecture of Xigaze. Numbers are expected to increase further as access to the stricken area improves and the communication network is restored. </li> <li>Over the next 24h, some rain or thunderstorms are expected at places in central, western and eastern Nepal. Isolated thunderstorms are forecast for north-eastern India over the next 48h and some rain may also affect the eastern part of Tibet Autonomous Region.</li> </ul> <p style="margin-left: 72pt; text-indent: -18pt;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif';"></span></p>  </article> <article> <h1>Nepal, India, China - Earthquake UPDATE</h1> <p>Mon, 27 Apr 2015 05:38:00 +02:00</p> <ul> <li>The 7.8M earthquake on 25 April that exposed thousands of people up to Violent shaking (USGS PAGER estimation), as well as the very strong aftershocks that occurred in Western and Central Regions in Nepal over 25-26 April, have caused extensive casualties and damage in Nepal, India, China and Bangladesh. </li> <li>As of 27 April, the death toll in Nepal has reached 3 218, with another 6 500 injured and hundreds still missing, according to local authorities quoted in media. Search and rescue operations, as well as national and international relief efforts and damage assessment, continue in the country. </li> <li>India has also been impacted by the series of earthquakes, with 66 deaths and 173 people injured, mostly in the eastern state of Bihar, as of 27 April. In China, 20 people were reportedly killed, while damage from landslides and collapsed buildings has been recorded, particularly in Tingri County. The Bangladeshi authorities report five people dead and 100 injured in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet Divisions, as of 26 April. </li> <li>Over the next 48h, thunderstorms may affect the earthquake-stricken areas in Nepal, as well as the states of eastern India and areas of Tibet Autonomous Region. </li> <li>The European Commission has deployed humanitarian experts and has announced on 26 April an initial emergency support of € 3 million.
