<ul> <li>An earthquake of magnitude 6 M at a depth of 10 km hit off the coasts of the province of Manabi on 22 April at 3.03 UTC, approx. 100 km south-west of the epicentre of the 7.8 M earthquake that occurred on 16 April in the province of Esmeraldas causing widespread damage and casualties. The Government of Ecuador has declared a national state of emergency and deployed 10 000 troops and 3 500 police to assist with rescue operations.</li> <li>National authorities reported that currently 272 people have been killed although this figure is expected to rise and at least 1 557 have been injured, as well as 370 buildings destroyed and over 151 affected. The access to some affected areas remains difficult.</li> <li>The European Union Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated and thus far over 50 Spanish USAR team members and six dogs have been deployed to the affected area. Further teams are being offered by both France and Poland. The deployment of an associated environmental expert for UNDAC is also under way.</li> <li>DG ECHO local team in Quito is assuring attendance at the Humanitarian Country Team meeting and Humanitarian Donor's Group, and is coordinating with EU Delegation, Member States, national authorities and partners. Two DG ECHO technical experts have been deployed to the field to assess needs.</li> <li>The European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre has activated the Copernicus Emergency management service for satellite maps.
