China, Vietnam - Tropical Cyclone KUJIRA

KUJIRA made landfall in Wanning city, south-east Hainan province, on 22 June, 18.50 local time (10.50 UTC), as a Tropical Storm. It then moved north-west over the island of Hainan. It affected the island with strong winds and heavy rainfall (247mm/24h in southern Hainan on 22 June). Authorities had previously evacuated nearly 40 000 people for precautionary reasons.
Over the next 24h, KUJIRA was forecast to exit Hainan island, moving north-west towards southern Guangxi in China and Quang Ninh in north-eastern Vietnam. It is expected to intensify temporarily and then weaken again, as it makes landfall in Guangxi or Quang Ninh.
As of 23 June early morning (UTC), there is a Blue Warning for Typhoon and a Yellow Warning for heavy rain in Hainan and in southern Guangdong and Guagnxi, China.
The timely rain from KUJIRA is expected to help ease a prolonged drought which has affected 30 percent of Hainan.
