China - Tropical Cyclone SOUDELOR

After hitting Taiwan early Saturday, SOUDELOR weakened and moved north-west towards China. It made landfall on Saturday night in the city of Putian, Fujian province. The heavy winds and rains affected the power supply of more than two million people. A total of 163 200 people were evacuated, three airports in the province were closed, 32 000 boats were ordered back to port and more than 530 flights were cancelled.

The emergency response level has now been downgraded from level three to level two in Fujian Province.

Earlier on Saturday the storm made landfall in Taiwan, killing five people and injuring 185. Four people are still missing. Land and sea warnings have been lifted but heavy rains are continuing increasing the risk of floods and mudslides. On Sunday 1 pm local time more than 370 000 families were still without electricity.

Over the next 24 h it is forecast to continue moving north-west, slightly intensifying. It may reach the coast of Hualien County (Taiwan) late on 7 August, as a Typhoon. After having crossed Taiwan it is forecast to reach Fuijian province (eastern China) on 8 August, as a Typhoon.

The US Federal Agency of Emergency Management (FEMA) was called in by local officials to assist in the recovery process.

Very strong winds, heavy rain and storm surge may affect the areas along the path of SOUDELOR on 7-8 August. As of 7 August there are advisories for very heavy rain as well as a Typhoon Warning in affect for Taiwan. Also, (as of 7 August) the Chinese Meteorological Administration has issued an Orange Warning for Typhoon.
