On 22 February at 0.00 UTC its centre was located approx. 508 km west of Viti Levu island (Fiji) and 360 km north-east of Tafea province (Vanuatu) and it had max. sustained wind speed of 176 km/h.</li> <li>Over the next 24 h it is forecast to move south-west with a change to south-east, remaining its intensity. Heavy rain and strong winds are still forecast for the already affected areas, as well as the province of Tafea (Vanuatu).</li> <li>Heavy rain has continued to affect the island of Viti Levu (Fiji) with 107 mm of rain in 24 h recorded in Nadi and 90 mm in Nausori over 21-22 February. Media report at least 20 people dead, thousands homeless and over 680 houses destroyed in the most affected island of Viti Levu, as of 22 February early morning (UTC).</li> <li>The Republic of Fiji has made a general request for assistance to the international community. On 23 February an ECHO expert will arrive in Fiji to assess the humanitarian impact of the cyclone and advise on the need for humanitarian assistance.</li> </ul> </article> <article> <h1>Tonga, Fiji, Niue - Tropical Cyclone WINSTON</h1> <p>Thu, 18 Feb 2016 04:21:00 +01:00</p> <ul> <li>On 18 February at 0.00 (UTC), TC WINSTON had max. sustained winds of 194 km/h and its centre was located approx. 230 km northwest of Niue and 330 km northeast of Vava'u islands (Tonga).</li> <li>Over the next 24 h it is forecast to move west-southwest, strengthening. Its centre may pass approx. 80-100 km north of Vava'u on 19 February, with max. sustained winds of 210-220 km/h. Then it may continue moving south-west, towards Lau islands (Fiji), slightly weakening. </li> <li>Based on this forecast, strong winds, heavy rains and storm surge may affect again Tonga, especially Vava'u and Ha'apai group of islands, on 18-21 February. Moreover heavy rains and winds may also affect Niue on 18-19 February and again the Lau group of islands (Fiji) on 20-23 February.</li> <li>In Tonga, over 60 families are already in shelters in Vava'u and another 35 in Ha'apai, according to media as of early 18 February.</li> </ul> </article> <article> <h1>Tonga - Tropical Cyclone WINSTON-16</h1> <p>Wed, 17 Feb 2016 03:41:00 +01:00</p> <ul> <li>TC WINSTON-16 continued moving north-east, strengthening, passing near the Vava'u islands and then slightly turning east. On 17 February at 0.00 UTC its centre was located approx. 260 km north-west of Niue island and it had max. sustained wind speed of 167 km/h.</li> <li>Over the next 24 h it is forecast to continue moving east and then turn south-west, strengthening and moving towards the Vava'u islands. It may pass near the Vava'u group of islands (Tonga) on 16 February morning (UTC). Afterwards, it may start turning west on 18 February, strengthening further. <span style="font-family: Verdana;">Heavy rain and strong winds may affect, over the next 48 h, the Ha'apai and Vava'u group of islands.</span></li> <li>Heavy rain has already been affecting the Ha'apai group of islands with approx. 192 mm in 24 h recorded over 15-16 February. On 15 February at 0.00 UTC its centre was located approx. 570 km south-east of the island of Tongatapu (Tonga) and it had max. sustained wind speed of 111 km/h (Tropical Storm).</li> <li>Over the next 24 h it will continue moving north-east, roughly remaining its intensity. Its centre may pass near south-eastern Lau group of islands on 15 February afternoon (UTC). It will then start strenghtening.</li> <li>Heavy rain and strong winds may affect, over the next 24 h, the Lau group of islands (Fiji), especially the islands of Ono-i-Lau and Vatoa, and Tonga.</li> </ul> </article> </main></body></html>
