Efforts to contain Málaga wildfire show some progress for first time in five days

Spanish authorities on Monday said some progress had been made toward containing a major wildfire that broke out in Sierra Bermeja, in Spain ’s southern Málaga province, on Wednesday of last week. The flames have already razed at least 7,400 hectares of forest land, forced the evacuation of 3,000 people and claimed one life.

About 500 firefighters were working in shifts on the ground, assisted by 50 water-dropping airplanes and helicopters from the air. They were joined on Sunday by 260 members of a military emergency unit. A 44-year-old firefighter died Thursday while trying to extinguish the blaze. Around 2,600 residents have been relocated in total.

According to Ministry figures, Spain has recorded 5 942 forest fires this year, devastating more than 46 600 hectares. To this list should be added the 22 000 hectares of mountain land, pastures and scrubland razed by fire in Ávila, making this the fourth largest and most serious forest fire in Spain’s history.
