The Associated Press MEXICO CITY Jan 4, 2006 — A strong earthquake struck early Wednesday off the Baja California peninsula in the Sea of Cortes, also known as the Gulf of California. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.7-magnitude quake occurred at 2:32 a.m. local time and was centered 56 miles northeast of Santa Rosalia, Baja California.

Large earthquake in northwestern Mexico (RTÉ News)

There has been a large earthquake in northwestern Mexico. The quake, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, struck some 89 kilometres from Santa Rosalia on the east coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.
