U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska based upon the fact that in accordance with the Russian labor code, any employee can resign in two weeks after notifying the company he or she is working for. Having informed his club about cancellation of the contract, Malkin acted in accordance with the law of his native country, the judge believes, RIA Novosti reported. Metallurg Magnitogorsk, a Russian Super League team, claims that Malkin is under contract in his native country's club, which made him a star rookie, until April, 2007. The club sought a preliminary injunction that would have banned the forward from playing for the Penguins. Manhattan District Court cleared the way for two other NHL clubs of minor league Andrei Taratukhin of the Calgary Flames and Alexei Mikhnov of the Edmonton Oilers too. "I am disappointed with the verdict passed by the judge, basing on out-of-date ideas about Russian hockey clubs, who seek compensations for lost players allegedly. Russian hockey has got enough sponsors willing to invest money into strong teams, nowadays," Alexander Berkovich, who represented Russia in the lawsuit, said. According to him, neither Metallurg, not Locomotive sought any financial compensation but claimed ensuring of contract discipline only. "Unfortunately, the judge did not admit our arguments, making her decision on the basis of the opposite party's," Berkovich said, doubting that the court's decision could be appealed. The reason for filing a suit by Metallurg against NHL was the incident, when Evgeni Malkin abruptly left camp in Helsinki to join the Pens this summer after signing a one-year contract with his team. The young Russian player, who had played for Russia at the Winter Olympic Games and had been the best junior rookie of the year, was met in the airport by a representative of the Penguins. The NHL club had been having talks with Malkin since 2004. In a letter presented in Manhattan Court on Malkin's behalf, he said, "I am proud of saying I am a member of Pittsburg Penguins and play for NHL now. The dream of my life has come true,' Malkin wrote.

Newslab<iso:language xmlns:iso="http://www.iso.org/3166">en</iso:language>

Sulzer wins contract for Siberian oil pipeline

Swiss engineering company Sulzer says its pump division has won a large order from Russia's Transneft for oil pipelines.

NZZ-english<iso:language xmlns:iso="http://www.iso.org/3166">en</iso:language>

Headlines in the German press

The following headlines appeared in major German newspapers on Thursday: ** FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG -Annan slams industrial nations for failing to combat climate warming -Bush supports Russia's WTO membership -Police sweep through Siemens' offices in Germany ** FRANKFURTER RUNDSCHAU -Major....

irna<iso:language xmlns:iso="http://www.iso.org/3166">en</iso:language>

Sulzer wins contract for Siberian oil pipeline

Swiss engineering company Sulzer says its pump division has won a large order from Russia's Transneft for oil pipelines.

swissinfo<iso:language xmlns:iso="http://www.iso.org/3166">en</iso:language>

Small tsunami hits Hawaii; ocean surges off Calif. coast after Japan quake

Small tsunami, some measuring several feet high, crashed into Hawaii on Wednesday, slightly injuring one swimmer, as ocean surges ...

usaToday<iso:language xmlns:iso="http://www.iso.org/3166">en</iso:language>

Bush, Putin agree to sign Russia WTO deal

NZ Herald By Michael Stott MOSCOW - US President George W. Russia played with Macedonia's team in Euro-2008 qualifying campaign and gained a 2-0 victory. Vladimir Bystrov opened the scoring after 19 minutes, hitting the gates of goalie Jane Nikoloski. Then it was the turn of Zenith forward Andrei Arshavin, who completed the scoring after a superb solo run. It is worth noting that Macedonia's defender Igor Mitreski, well-known to Russians fans after matches for Moscow Spartak, did not show himself best in both the missed goals. The hosts did not manage to make any serious attack on the gates defended by Russia's Igor Akinfeyev. Russia might have led it to a defeating score unless Yegor Titov was a little bit more lucky in his attempt in the second half, REGNUM reports. So Russia gained 8 points after four matches and is the second in Group E. Croatia is leading after a 4-3 victory over Israel.

Newslab<iso:language xmlns:iso="http://www.iso.org/3166">en</iso:language>

16.11.2006 13:34 - Putin and Bush talked half an hour more than planned

Moscow, Nov. 15 (RIA Novosti) - A meeting of Russian and U. S. presidents finished in Vnukovo-2 Airport in the evening. The meeting lasted for about 80 minutes. It had been planned the meeting would take about an hour. The meeting, where presidential wives took part too, was held as an informal breakfast. The U. S. President's airplane landed in Moscow for refueling on the way to Singapore. George Bush is to leave Moscow for Vietnam, where APEC forum would take place on November, 18-19. The Russian and U.S. presidents are meeting again in Hanoi on November, 19. The leaders are expected to sign a protocol about completion of bilateral talks on Russia's joining WTO and an agreement about intellectual property rights' protection in Hanoi, RIA Novosti reports. Russia is to assume duty to control law enforcement in this field. Putin and Bush are to discuss commercial and economic relations, struggle against terrorism, the situations in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan at Hanoi talks. The presidents are also going to touch upon Washington's sanctions against Rosoboronexport State Corporation and Development Design Office Sukhoy. A source in the presidential administration said the meeting of Putin and Bush in the capital of Russia had been caused by "necessity of contact" between the USA and Russia. Moscow finds it very important to maintain constant Russian-American dialogue, especially because of upcoming presidential poll in both the countries.

Newslab<iso:language xmlns:iso="http://www.iso.org/3166">en</iso:language>

Small waves hit Japan after quake sparks tsunami alert

Small tsunami waves hit Japan's northernmost island late on Wednesday after a major quake in the north Pacific triggered a full-scale tsunami warning for areas of northern Japan and Russia's sparsely populated Kurile islands. Naturally, the ethnic Russian communities in Estonia and Latvia are astir in conversations about whether or not Moscow’s offer is worth considering, let alone accepting. The Kremlin, which is facing one of the worst demographic slumps in the world, needs people.
