  • Mayon volcano, located in the province of Albay, Bicol Region, central Philippines, is in a state of unrest following six dome-collapse Pyroclastic Density Currents (PDC) and several rockfall events that drifted along the southern gullies within two kilometres from the summit crater. Lava flow, ash and gas emissions were also recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
  • PHIVOLCS raised the alert level to 3 which means that all the people living within the 6-km radius (Permanent Danger Zone) from the crater of the volcano are recommended to evacuate.
  • The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-DROMIC) planned evacuation centres, tents and basic necessities for the projected 15,000 families living within the 6-km permanent danger zone.
  • DG ECHO field offices and partners are monitoring the situation and are ready to assist affected population in case of need.

  • In the past 24 hours, the activity of Mayon volcano (located in Albay Province, Bicol Region, central Philippines) was characterized by very slow lava flows moving approximately 1 km from the crater, one volcanic earthquake and moderate ash emission drifting northeast as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
  • The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) holds full-council emergency meeting in the morning of 13 June with DG ECHO partners observing. Seven (7) Local Government Units (LGUs), Tobaco, Malilipot, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatoan, Ligao, and Santo Domingo have evacuated 14,865 individuals (4,159 families) in 22 evacuation centres as of 13 June.
  • DG ECHO field offices and partners closely monitor the situation and coordinate with the national authorities for any need of immediate relief assistance.

  • The state of unrest of the Mayon volcano in the central Philippines is still ongoing. In the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded two volcanic earthquakes, a very slow effusion of lava from the summit of the crater and steam-laden plumes that rose 700 m.
  • According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), almost 18,000 have been displaced (17,216 evacuated in 25 evacuation centres), and 37,682 people have been affected across 26 Barangays of the Albay Province in Bicol Region.
  • The alert level of the volcano stands at 3 which means that the volcano is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days.

  • In the past 24 hours, explosive and effusive activity is ongoing. Lava flows of 1,600 and 1,200 meters in length have been registered in the southern and south-eastern gullies of the volcano as well as more than 100 volcanic earthquakes and an ash plume 750 metres high.
  • Following this unrest phase of the volcano, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) reports more than 20,100 displaced people, of whom 18,706 evacuated in 28 evacuation centres, and almost 41,500 affected people across 26 Barangays in Albay Province.
  • The alert level of the volcano stands at 3 which means that the volcano is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days.

  • On 28 and 29 June, Mayon Volcano continued to feed two lava flows that advanced for 2,100 meters and 1,300 metres along Mi-isi and Bonga gullies respectively in the south and south-eastern direction. In addition, an ash plume 1,000 metres high drifting west-northwest, north-northwest and northeast direction was registered by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
  • As of 29 June, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) reports almost 20,200 displaced people (of whom 18,754 evacuated in 28 evacuation centres)  and more than 41,500 affected people across 26 Barangays in Albay Province (Bicol Region, central-eastern Philippines).
  • According to PHIVOLCS, the alert level of the volcano stands at 3.

  • Explosive and effusive activity of the Mayon volcano, located in Bicol Region, central Philippines, is ingoing. In the past 24 hours, two main lava flows moving in southern and south-eastern direction and ash plumes 100 m high have been recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
  • According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), moret than 20,200 people are still displaced while almost 38,400 others have been affected across 26 Barangays located in Albay Province (Bicol Region). DG ECHO’s partners remain on the ground, providing assistance to displaced people.
  • The alert level of the volcano stands at 3, meaning the volcano is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and a hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days. PHIVOLCS continues to recommended that the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains evacuated.

Updates on volcanic activity (Smithsonian)

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Mayon report has been published on 07 Jun 2023 10:20.
Daily visual and webcam observations of Mayon?s summit crater revealed more frequent rockfalls at the summit lava dome starting in the last week of April, indicating aseismic dome growth. The lava dome increased in volume by about 83,000 cubic meters during 3 February-9 May, with a total addition of nearly 164,000 cubic meters since 20 August 2022. Sulfur dioxide emission averages were as high as 576 tons per day on 29 April and 162 tons per day on 23 May. A total of 26 volcanic earthquakes had been recorded since 1 April. Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM), precise leveling, continuous GPS, and electronic tilt monitoring data showed that the volcano had been slightly inflated, especially on the NW and SE flanks, since 2020. Short-term inflation on the upper flanks had been detected since February. From 0500 on 4 June to 0500 on 5 June the number of rockfalls increased from an average of 5 events per day to 49 events per day. At 1000 on 5 June the Alert Level was raised to 2 (on a 0-5 scale). PHIVOLCS noted that although low-level volcanic earthquakes, ground deformation, and volcanic gas emissions indicated unrest, the steep increase in rockfall frequency may indicate increased dome activity.
