Updates on volcanic activity (Smithsonian)

At 1030 on 6 February the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a special notice warning residents that an upcoming tropical cyclone (Basyang) may result in lahars along Kanlaon?s drainages on the W, S, and E flanks. As a result, more than 1,000 residents in Negros Occidental were evacuated as a precaution, according to a news article. Unrest during 6-11 February was characterized by 1-7 daily volcanic earthquakes recorded by the seismic network, gas-and-steam emissions visible almost daily rising as high as 500 m and drifting in various directions, and sulfur dioxide emissions averaging 1,838 tonnes per day (t/d) on 7 February and 2,601 t/d on 8 February. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 0-5); the public was warned to stay out of the 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and pilots were advised to avoid flying close to the summit.
