  • Tropical Cyclone VAYU formed over the eastern Arabian Sea (Indian Ocean) on 10 June and started moving north. On 11 June at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 310 km west of Malvan (Maharashtra State, western India) with maximum sustained winds of 93 km/h (tropical storm).
  • It could reach southwestern Gujarat State on 13 June, with maximum sustained winds up to 150-160 km/h.
  • Heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast over western coastal states over the next 24 hours.
  • A strong wind and heavy rainfall warning is in effect for Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra States and a thunderstorm warning for Maharashtra States. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the eastern Arabian Sea.
  • The national government has deployed 15 teams of National Disaster Response Forces (NDRF) in coastal areas. The Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard have also been alerted to assist with relief operations if required.

  • On 13 June at 0.00 UTC, Tropical Cyclone VAYU's centre was approximately 185 km south-west of Junagadh City (Gujarat) and 135 km west of the coastal town of Veraval (Gujarat), with maximum sustained winds of 157 km/h.
  • VAYU is forecast to slighty strengthen as it continues north-west along the coast of western Gujarat, before weakening as it moves out to sea. 
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, strong winds and storm surge could affect Gujarat State in India.
  • According to media reports, two people died in a suburb of Mumbai and nearly 300,000 people were preventively evacuated across Gujarat.

  • Tropical Cyclone VAYU's centre was approximately 215 km south-southwest of Junagadh city and approximately 140 km south-west of the coastal town of Porbandar on 14 June at 0.00 UTC, with maximum sustained winds of 167 km/h.
  • The weather system is due to move westward to sea, far off western Gujarat, with maximum sustained winds of 157 km/h.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is forecast over Gujarat State and Coastal Karnataka, strong winds and storm surge over Gujarat and moderate rainfall over southern Sindh Province, Pakistan.
  • According to media reports, the power supply was disrupted in nearly 560 villages of Saurashtra and south Gurajat. Evacuation camps remain operational.

  • After doubling back on its track, Tropical Cyclone VAYU is forecast to continue north-east, hitting the coast of Kutch district (Gujarat) on late 17 June, as a tropical depression.
  • On 17-18 June, moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places is forecast to affect Gujarat State, while orange alerts have been issued for heavy rainfall in Saurashtra, Kutch, and North Gujarat regions until 18 June.
