New Caledonia, Vanuatu - Tropical Cyclone UESI Mon, 10 Feb 2020 10:08

  • A new Tropical Cyclone named UESI formed in the Coral Sea on 7 January, and is moving south towards New Caledonia (France). On 10 February, at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located approx. 300 km north of Belep islands (northern New Caledonia), with  maximum sustained winds of 102 km/h (Tropical Storm).
  • In the next 48 hours, UESI is forecast to strengthen, as it moves south in the Coral Sea, just off the coast of northern New Caledonia. The passage of UESI in the Coral Sea could affect also Vanuatu Islands.
  • A tropical cyclone alert was activated on 10 February throughout New Caledonia, while a tropical cyclone warning was issued for Sanma and Malampa Provinces (Vanuatu).
  • Heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over New Caledonia,  and throughout Vanuatu on 10-11 January.

  • After the passage of Tropical Cyclone UESI in the Coral Sea over 7-12 Febraury, damage has been reported on the northen islands of New Caledonia.
  • UESI passed off the coast of north-west New Caledonia, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. According to media reports, 16 people were evacuated to shelters on Belep and flood waters have damaged roads, leaving communities isolated. Power outages were reported in parts of the north of the main island Grande Terre.
  • In Febraury 2019, Tropical Cyclone OMA caused serious damage to agriculture in the same area.
  • Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast over Balep and Grande Terre Islands on 12-13 February.
