Cyclone Yaas, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, May 2021India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas crossed the North Odisha coast about 20km south of Balasore during the morning of 26 May 2021 (local), with an estimated wind speed of 130 to 140 km/h and gusts of 155 km/h. Moving north-westwards Yaas later weakened to a Severe Cyclonic Storm. IMD warned of storm surge of 2-3 meters in coastal areas and heavy rainfall in Odisha and West Bengal. India Over 1.4 million people were pre-emptively evacuated in Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand. According to India's National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), as of 26 May the storm had affected the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khordha, Kendrapara, Jajpur and Mayurbhanj in Odisha. Flooding, wind damage and fallen trees blocked roads, leaving villages isolated. Many were left without power. NERC reported 1 fatality in Keonjhar district and another in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) carried out rescues in flooded coastal districts of Purba Medinipur and 24 Parganas South in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters that about 20,000 mud houses and temporary shelters had been damaged. This is yet to be confirmed by NERC figures. NERC report of 27 May said that 8 people had died in the storm in the state of Tamil Nadu which affected 10 district and 188 villages. 611 people were evacuated. No further details given. Media reported coastal flooding in Kanyakumari. Bangladesh The Bangladesh Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief distributed aid items to flooded areas in 27 upazilas in nine coastal districts. Media reported 4,500 houses damaged in Bhola District, homes damaged in Khulna and Patuakhali Districts and 2 storm-related fatalities.
