Hurricane Ida, USA, August 2021Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on 29 August with winds of 230 km/h, making it the fifth-strongest hurricane ever to hit mainland USA. Storm surge of around 0.7 metres was reported along coastlines of northern Florida and southern Mississippi. In southern Louisiana storm surged reached 1.54 metres at Grand Isle. Ida also brought heavy rainfall of 250 to 400 mm. As a result of storm surge and rainfall, flooding was reported in wide areas of southern Louisiana, although authorities said the new levee system worked well in protecting New Orleans. Some levees were reported as breached however, for example along the Mississippi River at Braithwaite, Carlisle, LA, USA. Power and telecoms outages along with blocked roads hindered assessments. As of 30 August officials in Louisiana said 1 person had died in floods (another was killed by tree fall) and hundreds rescued from flooded areas, but feared numbers could rise.Tue 31 Aug 2021FloodList provided by Copernicus GLOFAS
