  • A strong earthquake of 7.4 M at a depth of 26.3 km occurred in southern Oaxaca State (Mexico) on 23 June at 15:29 UTC. The epicentre was located inland very close to the coast, approximately 11 km south-southwest of Santa María Zapotitlán Village, and 74 km west of Salina Cruz City. The earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks in the area.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that concerning the main event, up to 93,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking, and up to 733,000 to strong shaking. According to last report of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, tsunami threat has passed and minor sea level fluctuations of up to 0.3 metres can continue for the next few hours in the coast of Mexico.
  • Media report, as of 24 June, at least 6 fatalities and a number of injured people across isolated villages in the area and in the beach location of La Crucecita. In addition, around 200 damaged houses were reported across the area. Furthermore, slightly damaged buildings were also reported in the federal capital Mexico City, approximately 500 km north-west of the epicentre.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rain to locally very heavy rain is forecast over southern Mexico, including over Oaxaca, and Guerrero States.
  • DG ECHO partners - who have a presence in most of the states where the earthquake was felt - are monitoring the situation, especially in those areas previously hit by a strong earthquake in 2017 following which thousands of families are still living in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake resistant construction.

  • Following the earthquake of 7.4 M occurred in south Oaxaca State (Mexico) on 23 June, the number of fatalities stands at 10, but the amount of reported damage has increased.
  • According to the Government Oaxaca, 8,123 houses have been damaged, as well as 213 schools, 25 state highway sections and 7 vehicular bridges across 145 municipalities.
  • The authorities, with the help of the Mexican Red Cross, continue to provide help for those affected. A total of 72 municipalities have received the Declaration of Emergency from the National Coordination of Civil Protection.
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rain is expected over the affected area.
