  • An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 M at a depth of 40 km occurred offshore in the north-east Pacific Ocean, close to the southern coast of central Aleutian Islands (Alaska) on 19 October at 20.54 UTC. The epicentre was located approximately 90 km south-east of Sand Point City (Aleutians East Borough).
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 2,000 people were exposed to strong shaking. Several aftershocks with magnitude up to 5.6 M have been registered.
  • The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Advisory  for the coastal areas of South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula and then cancelled on 20 October. The earthquake triggered a tsunami, according to the sea level measurements, which indicated a wave up to 0.76 m in Chignik Bay and  0.70 m in Sand Point (Alaska).
  • According to media reports, there were no reports of casualties or damages in the area but some people living in the Sand Point area have been evacuated.
