  • A strong earthquake of 6.2 M hit the Western part of Sulawesi on the early morning of 15 of January. The epicentre of the quake was 60 km northeast of the city of Majene, at a depth of 10 km. The situation is still developing with possible aftershocks that could also trigger tsunami warnings. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning but was felt strongly for about seven seconds.
  • According to media, at least 30 people were killed, 637 injured and 15,000 displaced. It is estimated that there are still victims trapped in the rubble. In addition, the earthquake damaged 62 houses, one hotel, two health facilities, two government offices and there were also landslides. Power and communication networks are down and some roads are inaccessible due to the landslides.
  • The Indonesia Red Cross Society (PMI) is responding to the incident and has mobilized ambulances services, implementing assessment, evacuation and coordination of other services with the relevant authorities.
  • DG ECHO is evaluating the situation. A decision about a possible support will be quickly adopted.

  • After the strong earthquake of 6.2 M at a depth of 18 km occurred in Majene Regency (West Sulawesi Province, central Indonesia) on the early morning of 15 of January, the number of casualties has increased. The worst affected area  is the neighbouring Mamuju Regency.
  • The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reports, as of 18 January, 81 fatalities, of which 70 in Mamuju Regency and 11 more in  Majene Regency. The same source reports, 19,435 evacuated people (15,014 in Mamuju, and 4,421 in Majene) across 30 evacuation points (25 in Majene and 5 more in Mamuju). In addition, 932 injured people, 1,150 damaged houses and 15 damaged schools were reported across both Regencies.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode () on 15 January at 13:16 UTC, in order to support the damage assessment across affected Regencies. The International Disaster Charter was activated as well on 16 January.
  • Over the next 24 hours, moderate rainfall is forecast over most of Sulawesi Island.
