  • An earthquake of 5.8 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in eastern Taiwan on 18 April at 14.14 UTC (22.14 local time). The epicentre was located approximately 14 km south-west of Hualien City (Hualien County). A foreshock of 5.4 M at the same depth occurred at 14.11 UTC (22.11 local time) approximately 9 km south of the 5.8 M event.
  • Following the 5.8 M event, USGS PAGER estimates that up to 1,000 people were exposed to severe shaking, up to 28,000 to very strong shaking and up to 200,000 to strong shaking.
  • As of 19 April, there were no reports of casualties and damage. The earthquakes were felt in Hualien city, across the Hualien County and up to the capital Taipei.
