  • An earthquake of 5.8 M (as reported by NOA, Hellenic Seismic Network), at a depth of 10.4 km occurred in Crete Island on 27 September at 06.17 UTC (09.17 local time). The epicentre was located in the Arkalochori Town area and approximately 21 km southeast of Heraklion City (Heraklion Regional Unit).
  • Several aftershocks with magnitude up to 5.3 M (this one located 3,5 km east of Arkalochori Town at a depth of 10,7 km) have been recorded in the area by NOA. USGS PAGER estimates that up to 192,000 people were exposed to strong shaking.
  • According to media reports, one person has died in the Arkalochori, and the Greek Civil Protection reports 12 injured people. In addition, houses, buildings and infrastructure have been damaged in the towns of Arkalochori, Archontiko, Roussochoria and Patsideros. In addition, some damages have been reported in central Heraklion. 
  • National authorities provided immediate help for those affected by the seismic event. 
  • To date, the mainly affected municipality of Minoa Pediadas has been declared a state of emergency .
