  • An earthquake of 7 M at a depth of 29 km occurred on 30 March at 12.18 UTC (00.18 local time) in the Kingdom of Tonga, in the eastern Polynesia subregion. The epicentre was located about 73 km south-east of Pangai village on Lifuka island.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 3,000 people were exposed to strong shaking.
    The US Tsunami Warning System initially issued a tsunami threat, even though small waves of a maximum of 5 cm were observed in Alofi city of the Niue country in Polynesia.
  • According to media, there are no initial reports of casualties or damage.
