  • An earthquake of 8.8 M at a depth of 20.7 km occurred in the sea area over the northern Pacific Ocean, eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia on 29 July at 23.24 UTC (30 July at 10.24 local time). The epicentre was approximately 105 km east of Vilychinsk town in the Kamchatka Peninsula of the Russian Far East region. More than 15 aftershocks between 5.5 and 6.9 M have been recorded in the same area.
  • The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami threat for the entire east and west Pacific area. Waves with a height of 3 m were initially forecast; a maximum tsunami height of 0.42 m was observed in Atka city in Alaska state, north-western United States, and Hanasaki station in Hokkaido, in northern Japan.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 180,000 people were exposed to severe shaking and 92,000 to very strong shaking.
  • According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), as of 30 July, one person has been injured, 10,463 people have been displaced in Hokkaido prefecture, and approximately 2 million people are under evacuation order on the coastal area of Japan. Evacuations are in place in Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, in Hawaii islands and Monterey County in California in the United States, and preventive evacuations have been reported in Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. 
  • The earthquake and the tsunami are expected to have a high humanitarian impact based on their magnitude.

  • Following the earthquake of 8.8 M that occurred in the sea area over the northern Pacific Ocean, eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, on 29 July at 23.24 UTC, and the consequent tsunami, the humanitarian impact is changing.
  • Several aftershocks have been recorded in the area, and the Klyuchevskoy volcano erupted after the main earthquake.  According to national authorities, as of 30 July, the maximum recorded tsunami height was 1.3 m in Kujico station in Japan and 1.74 m in Maui station, Hawaii.
  • Media report, as of 31 July, several injured people in the most affected Severo-Kurilsk city area, on the Kuril islands, Sakhalin region, 2,000 evacuated people, and damage to infrastructure.
  • According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), as of 30 July, 11 people have been injured in Japan, 99,580 people across 22 cities in Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Chiba prefectures are under evacuation order.
  • Across the Hawaii islands of the United States, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a mandatory evacuation for tsunami was issued for Hilo, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu islands.
