  • A 6.2 M earthquake at a depth of 36.9 km struck Chile on 12 February at 13:34 UTC (10:34 local time). The epicentre was located 32 km southwest of Ovalle the in Coquimbo region. The event was followed by an aftershock in the same area, at a similar depth, 11.5 hours later.
  • For the main event, USGS PAGER estimates that 5 000 people were exposed to strong shaking and up to 168 000 people were exposed to moderate shaking.
  • Media reports dated?12 February report no casualties or significant damage, and no tsunami warning has been issued.
  • Tremors were felt across a broad swath of the Andes, from Chile’s Atacama and Ñuble regions to several Argentine provinces (including Mendoza, San?Juan, La?Ríoja, Córdoba and San?Luis). In the city of Mendoza, Argentina, public buildings such as the Government House were evacuated as a precaution. The shaking triggered rockfalls on the Cuesta de Los?Mantos along Route?D-605, Limarí province, Chile, temporarily halting traffic.
