Mozambique, December 2021The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported severe weather in Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane Provinces from mid December. As of late December INGD, quoted by media, reported storm and flood damage in Manica and Maputo Provinces. One person died and 270 were left homeless after strong winds and heavy rain destroyed or severely damaged around 50 homes in Manica Province. Schools and other public buildings as well as infrastructure were also damaged. Food, hygiene kits and relief supplies have been distributed among affected communities. As many as 1,627 families were affected, roads were blocked and 4,074 hectares of various crops were submerged following the overflow of the Incomáti river in Manhiça district, Maputo province. Local observers said the floods were caused by discharges at a dam in neighbouring South Africa from 15 December.
